Every FEMA employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official position description. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions. Typical assignments include:
Preparing, adjusting, troubleshooting, minor repairs of gas chromatographs. Collecting and analyzing air, water, and toxic agent operations waste streams. Presenting complex findings and maintaining chemical agent transfer documents. Serving as the technical lead for the COBRATT Air Monitoring Program. Developing monthly consumption reports and enforcing the laboratory quality assurance program. The qualification requirements listed below must be met within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Basic Requirements:
Degree:
physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR 2. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. You qualify for this position at the GS-12 level (starting salary $76,926) if you possess the following:
One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-11) in the Federal Service. This experience may have been gained in the federal government, a state or local government, a non-profit organization, the private sector, or as a volunteer; however, your resume must clearly describe at least one year of specialized experience. Specialized experience for this position includes independently performing full range chemical analyses and tests; providing technical guidance; preparing chemical agent syringes; scheduling routine laboratory tasks; and providing assistance on laboratory issues. Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
