Purpose of Position:
Performs a full range of difficult tasks associated with the machinist trade, works closely with shop groups, engineering personnel and representatives from vendors and suppliers in resolving problems related to the machinability of metals to specifications. Acts as a mentor to apprentices.
Principal Duties and
Responsibilities:
1. Plans and lays out work, referencing blueprints, sketches, work orders, written or oral instructions as required.
2. Sets up and operates any standard machine tools.
3. Machines a range of basic materials, including component parts of tools, dies, jigs and fixtures to required tolerances, making standard shop computations relating to dimension of work, tooling, feeds and speeds, and changing tools as required to ensure conformance to specifications.
4. Works closely with shop groups, engineering personnel and suppliers, contributing operational, design, and design change ideas in resolving problems affecting the machinability of metals to required tolerances.
5. Uses precision and standard measuring instruments to check work to required tolerances, as well as a variety of material handling equipment in safely moving materials or parts to and from machine tables.
6. Assembles and fits machined parts into mechanical equipment (e.g. trim tooling, bushings,
etc.).
7. Acts as a mentor to apprentices.
8. Performs related work and work of lower classifications as assigned.
9. Works under close supervision, receiving assistance from higher classified employees when warranted.
10. Works from basic engineering blueprints, use of basic shop mathematics and precision measuring instruments, and a thorough knowledge of machine shop practice and procedure as well as characteristics of basic metals.
11. Performs basic set-up and layout involving varying conditions of material and equipment utilizing basic degree of ingenuity, initiative, and judgment where only general methods of procedure are available.
12. Works safely in a team environment.
Required Skills and Education
Skills:
1. Has a High school degree or GED equivalent.
2. Has completed 2 years of continuous service as a Machinist 9 or completed the Apprenticeship Program.
3. Has successfully demonstrated the required skills sets of a Machinist 10 as set forth under the Machinist Skills and Evaluation Matrix.
